Swimming

We had 2 weeks of swimming instruction at Huia Pool. We all learnt to do new things and we had fun at the same time.
We finished with a swimming showcase for our parents, to show what we could do in the pool.
On our last day we had a fun day and enjoyed going on the flying fox. It was really fun.

Peace Week cranes

This week has been Peace Week. Today our senior buddies in our Whanau Groups taught us to make Peace Cranes. It was a bit tricky but with help we managed to complete one each. Our school goal is to try and make 1000 cranes. Thank you to our buddies for helping us. Mr Scott - it was a good idea.

Grandma's Glasses

Yesterday we learnt a poem about Grandma's Glasses. We then decorated our own glasses

Here are grandma's glasses
And here is Grandma's hat,
Here's the way she folds her hands
And puts them on her lap.
Here are Grandpa's glasses,
Here is Grandpa's hat,
Here's the way he folds his arms
And has a little nap.

Our new land rover

Wow!! This week we came to school and by our new sandpit there was an exciting discovery - we had a land rover to play on!
Thank you Mr Tyrer and your hard working team of workers. We love our new sandpit.

We wrote stories about the adventures we would go on if we were driving the land rover...

I am going to the jungle because the land rover was going to the jungle. Then the land rover heard a sound. It was lions. They roared very loud. When I went to the jungle I went down the road.
Lincoln

In my land rover I am going to join the army and we were in the jungle. There was a cheeky monkey.
Charlie

I am going to war in my land rover. It was a bumpy ride because there was shrapnel on the ground from the bombs. When the war was finished, I was stuck in a trench in a trap. I got rescued by some of my team. They used really strong strength to get me out of the trap.
Dean

My land rover went to a grassy hill. It was a bumpy ride because we were going over stones. The petrol ran out. I was stuck on the grassy hill. I phoned Charlie and Charlie helped me.
Declan

My land rover was taking me into the jungle and it was a smooth ride. I got out of the land rover and I ran to a big mountain.
Shay

The land rover went to the mountain and I saw a mother duckling.
Charles

My land rover is going to the jungle today. On the way there I see tracks in the mud and a panda bear. What are panda bears doing there? Oh good, they’ve gone. Oh Sun bears! I’m going to hop out of the land rover and hug it. Oh no! the land rover is driving away. I’d better run after it. Yay! I stopped it. I have made it to the jungle. I see a big elephant stomping around. Oh it’s my favourite animal – a giraffe. She has got lots and lots of spots. I get to ride on it. We all lived happily ever after.
Sian

I went to the jungle in a land rover. I saw a lion and it plunged at me. Then I threw a sword at it and it died. I said “Whew!” I kept on going then I saw a tiger. It was scared of me.
Stanley

My adventure is going to the pool in my land rover. There was a whale.
Shiloh

My land rover is taking me to the jungle. I saw lizards that were so beautiful. There were lots of types of colours like green, blue, black and orange.
Louie

My land rover is taking me to the jungle and if I saw a monkey  I would jump out and hug it.
Lydia

My land rover will take me to the jungle. It will be bumpy if I drive on a vine or a stone. It  might be scary in the night. It is a very good adventure. I love driving the land rover.
Alyssa

Me and my land rover are going to an ice kingdom. It was cold. I put on my coat, and my hat and my scarf. There was a king and queen. They had a little daughter, Princess Kate.
Erin

We went to see the land rover. It is taking me to the river. I got wet. I saw fish.
Caleb

My land rover is taking me to the jungle. I am not afraid. I am on the bumpy road. I have to stop and I say ‘why have we stopped?”  …because the road works is happening.
Nicole

My adventure
My land rover is taking me through the bush. I am going up steep hills and I will go down hills too. I will have a bumpy ride. There will be a river in the bush. There might be a snake. It is an awesome adventure.
Sam

In my land rover I’m going to the zoo. Bump…OW you rock. The rock said sorry. I said I’m going to be late for work.
Phoebe

My adventure
If I was in the land rover I would go to the beach and have an ice cream. Then I would go to the jungle and find a snake. It would be bumpy going across twigs. WOW ! What an adventure.
Kate

Leaves

We looked carefully at leaves from around our school. We looked at the shape and the different textures of the leaves. We then carefully drew the leaves.

Bush Builders at Normandale School

Today Kim, from Wellington Zoo came to our school. She spent time with all the classes.

When Kim was in Room 4, she talked to us about how we are connected to nature and how we are  lucky to be surrounded by natural native bush.

She told us about ecosystems and how all things in nature rely on each other to survive. If we took away . trees, everything else would die as trees give us oxygen to breathe. We can help this by planting trees to replace those that are cut down.

We went outside and looked under the bush to see if we could see any creatures. We used magnifying glasses, binoculars etc to look. Unfortunately, we did not find anything but we are carefully looking when we are outside during the day.

Bush Builders at the Zoo

At last the day dawned fine and our trip to the zoo was on!!
We spent the morning leaving our hand prints around the zoo.

First we planted a tree on the river trail. It was a prickly plant and it is meant to stop people walking through the garden. It was also a smelly plant to detract from the poo smells at the zoo!!
We also left muddy hand prints on a tree picture.

Next we went to see the penguins. Wow- we saw 2 little blue penguins. We learnt we should keep our cats inside at night to stop them attacking penguins, (we should be ok in Normandale as there are no penguins!!)
We also drew chalk pictures of penguins, and left gluey handprints on a picture of a penguin. After we made a handprint, we threw sand at it! Fun.

After that we went into the kiwi house where we got to touch a 5 year old tuatara. It was very soft. We also saw 3 kiwis running around. Tahi the kiwi only had 1 leg so he hopped.
Here, we left glow in the dark paint hand prints on a tuatara shape. When we had finished, the lights were turned off and we saw them glowing.

Our last activity in the morning was to go on a hunt and find conservation signs. We  found lots.

Thank you Kim for all the fun things you organised for us to do.

in the afternoon we were able to walk around the zoo and see all the animals. It was exciting walking through the Australian section where the animals ere wandering around us.

It was a really fun day.
